On the run:
I took the knuckle lights out at 5 am for a test run. What I noticed really quickly was that these lights work really well when running. My natural arm swing as I ran lit up the path directly in front of me and there wasn't any dizzying effects from the lights jumping around. Although if, of course, you turned off one light the jumping around effects was pronounced but that's why they provide you with two knuckle lights. Another thing was once on, the weight of them on my knuckles were no big deal and because the knuckle lights has a foam backing they were comfortable when strapped on. You also have use of your hands and could easily carry a water bottle or a phone in your hand if you wanted.
I'm a big advocate of being safe when I run so I love looking like a lit up Christmas tree and with these knuckle lights on, there is no doubt in my mind that you will be seen. With the swaying of your arms from afar I can imagine the blinking effect that one gives when running with them. If I had to choose between running with a head lamp and running with a pair of Knuckle Lights I'll take the knuckle lights.
I do have to mention that when I slowed down to walk my natural arm swing led the lights to face downwards so there wasn't as much light directly in front of me but it was sufficient to light my way. Definitely works better with running.
Overall: I'd say if you want a good pair of running lights to light up your way when you run go out and invest in a pair of knuckle lights. They retail for $39.99 on the their website www.knucklelights.com

I'll be running the JFK 50, my first race over the marathon distance. The training is quite simple...RUN! This calls for me getting up quite early in the morning in order to get home and get the kids off to school. I love running in the early morning but its also dangerous being in complete darkness, and that's where these would come in handy.
ReplyDeleteI've been very intrigued by these and have gone back and forth about trying them. As a running coach, I like to try out new things that I can then pass along to our runners!! Hopefully you will pick me!! :)
ReplyDeleteMy next race is this weeekend, the Great Race 10K in Pittsburgh. It's a race I've run many times, but only once at this distance. Looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteThe info on the knuckle lights is helpful. I've been using a headlamp for night runs, but it doesn't seem as helpful as lights closer to the ground.
My next race is the Chicago Marathon on October 13. Great review - very intriguing product! I do all of my weekday runs early in the morning, so as the sunrise gets later, therse runs are in the dark of night. The Knuckle Lights will make sure I can be seen by the cars and trucks out and about that early.
ReplyDeleteI run and walk every morning on roads without street lamps anywhere around. I typically use a headlamp, but don't like the bright light shining in my face as it illuminates the road way in front of me....I've been thinking about these as well as another head lamp....
ReplyDeleteI tri in the summer and run in the winter- because it's cold and dark in the morning. I love great lighting. Plus - the knuckle lights will be handy to shine into the desert and look for coyote eyes reflecting back at me (and my four legged running partner). Next race? Patagonia Oly Tri - Nov 2nd.
ReplyDeleteI do most of my running predawn and am a clumsy person in daylight... these things will save my life, if not my knees and the palms of my hands!
ReplyDeleteNext big race is Toughest 10K Galveston, Oct 19th - this will be an early morning run and running lights would be great to get started - we also do evening runs and with time change coming next month, will definitely need running lights for safety.
ReplyDeleteI could definitely use these for my early morning runs and I definitely could have used these during my night time half in August.
ReplyDeleteI actually have a pair of knuckle lights and love them but would like to have a pair to share. I am running the Night Light trail run on 10/11 which will be a great event for their use. I am also running my first Ragnar (Key West) in FL in February and will definitely need lights for my night leg.
ReplyDeleteI do pre-dawn trail runs before my children wake up. I use a headlamp, but there is often an annoying reflective glare in my glasses. These Knuckle Lights look like a great solution.
ReplyDeleteMy next big race is a local Autumn Race in northern IL.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'd love to use these since I find myself losing light so quickly these days while I'm out trying to squeeze my runs in.
DeleteBeen wanting to try these! I think they'd be great in a Ultra when you really don't want to carry much extra! Looking at a timed 6/12/24hr race in november which these might come in handy!
ReplyDeleteI have wanted you try these & pink is my favorite color. Would definitely come in handy for early morning runs on the beach!
ReplyDeleteCool piece of gear. Would come in handy in the coming months during marathon training season in the early dark hours of running on the Trinity River.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any lights to run with, so these would be great as it starts to get dark earlier. I really like that they don't bounce when you're running. I used a headlamp for my night run at the Texas Independence Relay, and I felt like there were times when I would move my head and not have much light.
ReplyDeleteNext big race is a half marathon on Sunday :-) I'd like to try the knuckle lights because it is dark in winter, and winter is almost here. I will probably also review them on my blog at ultracassie.gmail.com if I win. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy next big race is Sunday, October 13, the Space City 10 Miler. I have been logging extra miles in the morning, and these would be great to run with.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review Jeremy! I would love to use these during my training runs for the Houston marathon in January!! That's my big race! :) They'd come in handy now that it's starting to get dark earlier.
ReplyDeleteMy next big race is Houston Marathon and the review on the knuckle lights is awesome and thanks again Jeremy!
